著書『ユダヤと日本・謎の古代史』より  　つぎにラビ・トケイヤーの著『ユダヤと日本・謎の古代史』（産能大学出版部　１９７５年）より、いくつかラビの研究を引用してみたい。  《Ｎ・マックレオドの研究》  「ここで一人の男を紹介したい。彼はマックレオド（N. McLeod）といい、今から約１１０年ほど前、明治維新の初期に横浜に来日した。  　彼はスコットランド人で、学者ではなく一般の商人であったが、日本の歴史を調べ、各地で行われる祭式を調べ、食物、衣服、その他さまざまの伝統行事について『日本古代史の縮図』（Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan　１８７５年）という本を横浜で印刷し、刊行した。  　この本の中でマックレオドは、日本人だけがその他の東洋民族とは全く異なった文化や行動様式をもっており、それがどうして起こったかということは説明がつかないと述べている。  　ただし２５００年の昔に、イスラエルの12支族のうちの大部分である10支族が、東方世界に追放されたという聖書の記述に従うなら、そして、これらの古代イスラエル人が日本にまで渡来して住み着いたとするなら、日本で行われている説明のつかない様々の行動様式も、また祭式のあり方なども、よく理解できると述べたのである」 

「Ｎ・マックレオドは、日本民族の起源について述べている。  　彼は京都の祇園祭を訪れ、日本人の神官の着る衣服と古代ユダヤ人の祭司が着た衣服との間に数々の共通点を発見している。古代ユダヤ人の祭司が着た真っ白で房のついた服は、日本の神官のそれと全く同じものである。  　また、祇園という名前はシオン（エルサレムの愛称）がなまったものであろうと想定した。このようにしてマックレオドは、日本の食事習慣、日本の日常生活についてまで観察し、多くの日本人はその理由を知ることなしに一つの伝統として様々なユダヤ的行事を行っているという指摘をしたのであった。  　マックレオドは、旧約聖書にみられる様々な事柄が、明治維新直後の日本人の生活全般にわたって認められることを報告したのである。  　彼の指摘した最も重要なことは、これらの類似点はシルクロードの端であるイスラエルと、もう一つの端である日本にのみ発見されているという点に、注意を喚起しているということである」  「マックレオドは（旧約）聖書を詳しく勉強していたので、古代ユダヤ人の風俗習慣についてよく知っていた。だから、彼はその本の中で、日本人こそイスラエルの失われた10支族と深い関係を持っていると述べたのである。

マクレオド(1877年)の図版多数

マクレオドの図版集(1877年)は部分的に再刊されているが、本書のように電子版があると参照、紹介しやすくて便利だ。
重要な図版はほとんど孫引きで再録されている。

本書を推薦する理由は、明治天皇とつながりのある小林隆利牧師の証言が紹介されているからだ。

《小林　母・仁(しのぶ)は、私が成長し、やがて日本という国について意識するようになりましたときに、初めて本当のことを言ってくれました。  「私の父（明治天皇）が言われたのよ。『日本は神道だが、神道はもとはユダヤ教である。天皇の権限で日本の歴史を調べたが、神道は紀元前にはこの日本にユダヤ教として入って来た。そして、のちに入って来た原始キリスト教に習合されている。だから日本はキリスト教が中心になってくるべきだ』と」。母のこの言葉は私の心に焼き付いています。  
　天皇家の由来についても、明治天皇はこのように語っておられたと、母は、繰り返し言っておりました。  「日本の元はユダヤ教が母体として入ってきたのだから、日本の天皇家の中心も、日本の国全体の中心も、その源はユダヤにある。それを完成したのがキリストでありキリスト教である」と。  
中丸　それは本当に衝撃的なお言葉ですね。 
 小林　明治天皇は、平素深い愛をもって信頼をおかれていた内親王である母・仁に衷心からの思いを込めた言葉で、あるとき「仁、おまえが男であったらなあ……」と何度も洩らしておられたことを、母は私にポツリと話したことを憶えています。更に続けて、「仁、いよいよ、お前が結婚して男の子が生まれたら牧師にするんだよ。きっと役に立つ時が来るよ」とも話したことも。  
　母が成人になった私に、口癖のように、父・明治天皇からの遺言ともいうべき言葉を伝えてくれたことを忘れることはできません。  「仁、覚えておけよ。これは推測じゃないよ。自分が天皇という立場で調べさせた結果を、それをお前に言うんだ」 その結果というのが、「日本の国は古代からユダヤの流れなんだよ」ということでした。それをはっきり、何度も何度も語って聞かせてくれました。 
 　そして母は、父・明治天皇の言葉として更にこのようなことも伝えてくれました。  「１８６７年（慶応３年）の２月に天皇即位、11月９日、一五代将軍徳川慶喜の大政奉還。１８６８年明治維新。そしていちばん大事なことの一つは、翌年の明治２年４月、フルベッキが東京に来てくれたこと。あれがよかった」と。》






















小林隆利牧師  　大正１４年、明治天皇内親王　仁様の御長男として名古屋に生まれる。幼少の頃から名古屋の救世軍の礼拝に母、仁様と出席。その後、出隆東京大学教授・哲学博士のもとでマルクス哲学を学んだ後、立命館大学で数学物理学を修める。京都にて大江邦治牧師の説教によって入信。ナザレン神学校第一期生として卒業後、ナザレン教団久村教会、千葉南総町牛久教会、北九州小倉教会、大阪田辺教会の牧師を歴任。その後、単立堺鳳教会牧師を経て、手塚山朝祷会チャプレン、巡回牧師の任にあたられた。天皇家ユダヤ民族研究会主宰。

  Condition. The covers are in Poor condition. The front cover is detached. Both covers have the cloth missing in spots and raveling along the edge. The decoration on the cover is only visible when viewed at an angle and then is only faint. Internally the book is in Good condition. There is waterstaining which is confined primarily to the front and back and the area off the plates in the area of the spine. The plates are basically clean. Because the pages were not separated/protected by tissue guards, image foxing on adjacent pages is prevalent. A few pages have tears but none extend into the image area. There is no listing of illustrations so it is not possible for me to confirm all pages are present. However, I see no evidence that pages have been removed.

  McLeod, N (Nicholas):
Illustrations to the Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan, Including Illustrations to the Guide Book, Collected and Arranged by N. McLeod, Kioto (Kiyoto), 51 leaves containing 77 pages with copper engraved illustrations showing 160+ images, cloth boards, cord tied, spine uncovered, large oblong 8vo (6 3/4 x 11 in). The book is composed of 51 leaves (title page plus preface plus 49 leaves with illustrations). Most illustrated leaves are printed front and back. Aside from the preface and the captions to the illustrations, there is no text.

McLeod was a Scottish independent missionary and businessman who arrived in Japan in 1867. As many others did in various lands during the 19th century, he sought to find the descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (5th century B.C.) and did so, in his opinion, in the Japanese people. He wrote his first book on this subject in 1875. It was titled Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan, Including a Guide Book and had no illustrations. In this book he outlined what he believed to be proofs that the Japanese people descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. This first book was not illustrated. It was supplemented with illustrations two years later by this book. Over the five years from 1875-1879, McLeod produced a number of similar books (some with limited illustrations), and companion volumes of illustrations on the same general topic. It is my experience that the books of 1875~1877 are quite scarce and are rarely seen on the market. The books from 1878 and 1879 are also scarce but do appear on the market from time to time.
