Bernard Bolzano's father was a merchant from Lombardia who lived in Bohemia. Bernard studied at the University of Prague and was ordained as a prest in 1805. In the same year he became a professor of the doctrine of Catholic Religion at the University of Prague. He was also an eminent mathematician and logician, known for his paradoxes of the infinite. Due to the versatility of his talents he was regarded as one of the last polymaths. He published on religion as well as on philosophy and mathematics.

He was also a philanthropist. With his friends and pupils he supported poorhouses, loan banks, libraries and elementary schools.
