i support it.
new conspiracy theory that i believe in.
uh until we have evidence for that.
 let's look at the evidence of the correlation between the prominence of guns and the prominence of gun deaths in america.


according to a 2018 small arms survey america has nearly 400 million guns in the hands of civilians that does not include the military and the police.
so you can see the population there on the light brown line 326 million people but 393 million guns that means for every 100 people in the united states.
 there are about 120.5 firearms by far the highest rate among the world's wealthiest countries let's look at this graph.
you can see the united states in the far left black bar and every other country in tan to the right.


 so we are outpacing them tremendously.
 according to the congressional research service.
 there are roughly twice as many guns per capita in the united states today as there were in 1968 and the production of guns in the united states has tripled since 2 000.
 so we know that we have a lot of guns but does that number correlate with gun violence well let's compare the us to other countries around the world.
 so this is an amazing graph where you can see the outlier in the top right you might miss it because it's not with the rest of the cluster is the united states you can see guns per 100 people on the bottom x-axis there and on the y-axis on the left gun related deaths per 100 000 people.


 so when we look at deaths per capita and the amount of guns we have very clear correlation here with the united states up on the far right but to be fair gun violence over time has gone up and down since the 60s but has increased sharply over the past decade or so.
and you can see u.s gun suicide and gun murder rates have increased in recent years but remain below past highs so mass shootings.


on the other hand have absolutely skyrocketed.


 this graph is astounding you can see between 1966 and 75 there were 12 mass shootings between 2011 and 2020.
 there were 160 and this data is from 2013 so it's likely changed a bit since then but the trend is still incredibly obvious states with more guns have more gun deaths.
 let's go to this next graph.


 so this is gun ownership versus gun deaths very clear correlation here as well uh super obvious that when you see the percentage of adults that have guns increasing.
 you also see gun deaths per 1000 100 000 residents also increasing this data is coming from the world economic forum.


there we've reporting from vox that a 2014 review of the research published in the annals of internal medicine found that access to firearms was associated with a doubled risk for homicide and a triple risk for suicide a 2017 piece also ran through the evidence concluding that gun ownership was associated with a higher risk of homicide suicide in accidental shootings.
 so it tracks that the number of guns in the united states has multiplied gun violence in schools has gone up too but of course we could have all prevented this if we could have only prayed in the schools.

 このデータは2013年のものなので、その後少し変化していると思われますが、それでもこの傾向は驚くほど明らかで、銃の数が多い州ほど銃による死亡者数も多いのです。
 次のグラフを見てみましょう。


 これは銃の所有と銃による死亡の比較です ここでも非常に明確な相関関係があります 銃を持っている成人の割合が増加していることを見れば、超明確です。

    Abstract
    American gun-owners, uniquely, view firearms as a means of keeping themselves safe from dangers both physical and psychological.
    We root this belief in the experience of White Southerners during Reconstruction-a moment when a massive upsurge in the avail-
    ability of firearms co-occurred with a worldview threat from the emancipation and the political empowerment of Black Southerners.
    We show that the belief-complex formed in this historical moment shapes contemporary gun culture: The prevalence of slavery in a
    Southern county (measured in 1860) predicts the frequency of firearms in the present day. This relationship holds above and beyond
    a number of potential covariates, including contemporary crime rates, police spending, degree of racial segregation and inequality,
    socioeconomic conditions, and voting patterns in the 2016 Presidential election; and is partially mediated by the frequency of people
    in the county reporting that they generally do not feel safe. This Southern origin of gun culture may help to explain why we find that
    worries about safety do not predict county-level gun ownership outside of historically slave-owning counties, and why we find that
    social connection to historically slaveholding counties predicts county-level gun ownership, even outside of the South.
