I specialize in the political thought of the philosopher and novelist William Godwin (1756–1836). Drawing on approaches associated with intellectual history, I re-examine the dominant interpretation of Godwin that has largely framed him through the lens of “philosophical anarchism.” Instead, I foreground his educational theory and the concept of the “Enquirer” as central to his broader project of moral and political reform.
More broadly, my investigations explore the historical development of anarchism, its theoretical possibilities within political thought, and the transformation of the concept of “anarchy” in the history of political ideas.
Drawing on Godwin’s educational thought, I am engaged in pedagogical practice at Jiyu no Mori Gakuen as an attempt to explore the possibilities of school education grounded in non-coercive relations and enquiry.
